Living With Wildlife
Westchester residents share their community with a variety of wildlife. Here's how to coexist safely.
Common Wildlife in Westchester
Our community is home to deer, coyotes, raccoons, opossums, skunks, rabbits, and various bird species. While these animals generally avoid humans, encounters can occur.
Coyote Safety
Coyotes are present throughout the Chicago suburbs, including Westchester. They are typically shy and avoid humans, but it's important to take precautions:
- Never feed coyotes or leave food outside
- Keep small pets indoors or supervised when outside
- Secure garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids
- If approached, make loud noises and make yourself appear large
- Never run from a coyote - back away slowly while facing the animal
Deer
White-tailed deer are common in Westchester. Please drive carefully, especially at dawn and dusk when deer are most active. Do not feed deer, as this can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans and vehicles.
General Wildlife Tips
- Never feed wildlife - It makes them dependent and less afraid of humans
- Secure trash - Use bins with tight lids
- Remove attractants - Don't leave pet food, bird seed, or fallen fruit outside
- Keep distance - Observe wildlife from afar; never approach
- Protect pets - Keep cats indoors and dogs on leashes
